Definition

  • The number of nursing encounters with related hours for direct and indirect activities that can be associated with the provision of care to a client for a unit or service during a reporting period. The volume of nursing care is determined by combining a type of encounter with a type of nursing provider with a type of client and then either the designated number of hours per encounter, maximum number of encounters possible or actual number of encounters on a unit for a reporting period. An encounter is an interaction between a provider and a client for the direct provision of health care service(s).
