Enterovirus and Parechovirus A RNA [Identifier] in Specimen by NAA with probe detection

EV+PeV A RNA Spec NAA+probe

Definition

  • Enterovirus and parechovirus are both in the family picornaviridae. Like enterovirus, parechovirus is thought to be a potential cause of acute gastroenteritis in children, as well as severe central nervous system infection in the neonatal period. It may be underdiagnosed without testing. As a result, it has been recommended that, because of common clinical presentations, real time PCR for both viruses should be performed, especially in the case of atypical neonatal seizures. Annals of Neurology. Verboon-Maciolek 2008. Sept 64(3):266-73 Several labs perform this test, including Quest Diagnostics at Nichols Institute: Enterovirus/Parechovirus RNA, Qualitative Real-Time PCR http://www.nicholsinstitute.com/TestDetail.aspx?TestID=2424
