Definition

This panel contains the qualitative results for the detection of Bordetella species IgG and IgA antibodies against pertussis toxin (PT, 28kD) and filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA, 220 kD) in serum using immunoblot test strips. Levels of antibodies against PT and FHA are typically increased following either vaccination or natural exposure to B. pertussis. Detection of IgG antibodies is more sensitive than detection of IgA antibodies since patients may not have a measurable IgA response. A positive PT-100 band indicates the presence of a high IgG antibody concentration (at least 100 IU/ml) against B. pertussis toxin.
