Definition

  • Determination of sterols (e.g. desmosterol, lathosterol, campesterol, and sitosterol) in serum or plasma is performed to diagnose conditions such as desmosterolosis (desmosterol reductase deficiency) and sitosterolemia. Patients with sitosterolemia are known to develop premature coronary artery disease, cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), and Smith-Lemli-Optiz (SLO) syndrome. is performed to assess dietary plant sterol intake and intestinal absorption.
