Definition
- A non-invasive test that measures the permeability of the small bowel after ingestion of a sugar solution (e.g. lactulose and mannitol).[PMID: 7714684] The test consists of fasting, drinking a sugar solution and collecting the urine specimen for five hours. The submitter's lab measures glucose, sucrose, lactulose, mannitol, and inositol.free (myoinositol) levels in the urine. Results are used as a diagnostic aid for a variety of gastrointestinal and auto-immune diseases, including allergies, autism, hyperactivity and poor concentration, coeliac disease, malabsorption and deficiencies, malnutrition, chronic skin problems, and inflammatory bowel disease in both children and adults. The test may also be used for evaluation of therapeutic interventions.
