Definition
- A sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is collected using a procedure called a lumbar puncture or spinal tap. Often, three or more separate tubes of CSF are collected (tube 1, tube 2, tube 3), and multiple tests may be run on the different tubes. Only a small amount of protein is normally present in CSF because proteins are large molecules and do not cross the blood/brain barrier easily. Decreases in CSF protein are not generally considered significant. Increases in protein are most commonly seen with; meningitis and brain abscesses, brain or spinal cord tumors, multiple sclerosis and other disorders. [Lab Tests Online]
