Abacavir [Mass/volume] in Amniotic fluid

Abacavir Amn-mCnc

Definition

  • Abacavir, an antiretroviral given to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected pregnant women, crosses the placenta by simple diffusion and concentrates in the amniotic fluid, probably through fetal urinary excretion. Antiretrovirals in the amniotic fluid at delivery may amount to an oral loading dose for the newborn, which would continue to be absorbed in the hours following birth. Further investigations are needed to determine the long-term effect of antiretroviral medication exposure through amniotic fluid. [PMID: 15504861]
