Definition

  • Bile alcohol levels in urine may be measured in patients with suspected bile acid synthesis defects, including cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), an inherited autosomal recessive lipid storage disorder characterized by neonatal cholestasis, chronic diarrhea, cataracts and tendon xanthomas.[OMIM: 213700][PMCID: PMC3296980] Testing is performed for the diagnosis and treatment of CTX or other bile acid synthesis defects.
