NM Salivary gland Vs function W RNC IV

Definition

  • Nuclear salivary gland imaging can be done to evaluate salivary gland function as well as patency of the salivary duct and salivary tumors. In the first phase, dynamic blood flow is oberved immediately after pertechnetate injection, and then dynamic imaging is done for about 20 minutes to evaluate gland uptake. Appearance of pertechnetate should begin a minute after injection and reach its peak between 10 and 20 minutes. In the second phase of the study, the patient is given lemon juice to drink, which stimulates the excretory function of the glands. In the second phase, either static images or longer dynamic acquisition that covers both the pre- and post- stimulus phases may be used may be acquired. With normal salivary gland functioning, the amount of pertechnetate visualized in the glands should begin to decrease almost immediately after lemon stimulation. [PMID: 19223429]
