Preoperative measures for patient safety panel
Preop measures for pt safety pnl
Definition
- Preoperative measures for patient safety include procedures that are intended to ensure patient safety in that the correct procedure is performed on the correct patient and patient body site and facilitate communication between surgical team members. Such measures include: 1) preoperative verification of patient identity, procedure and site; 2) marking the operative site; and 3) taking a time-out just prior to starting the procedure during which surgical team members communicate about and confirm patient identity, site and procedure, and resolve any other relevant questions or concerns. Multiple organizations have published protocols and/or checklists for prevention of surgical errors, including The Joint Commission (http://www.jointcommission.org/standards_information/up.aspx), the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/patientsafety/safesurgery/checklist/en/) and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (https://www.aorn.org/guidelines/clinical-resources/tool-kits/correct-site-surgery-tool-kit/aorn-comprehensive-surgical-checklist).
