Measured RMR

Definition

  • Resting metabolic rate (RMR), sometimes called resting energy expenditure (EE), is commonly measured by indirect calorimetry, which requires quantification of oxygen consumption and sometimes carbon dioxide production while a patient is resting. Indirect calorimetry techniques for measuring RMR are commonly used in research and clinical applications.[PMCID: PMC3928639] Results are used to determine minimal energy requirements for patients receiving nutritional therapy. RMR estimates are also used to counsel patients regarding caloric intake in weight loss programs.
