Rating of perceived exertion [Score]

RPE Score

Definition

  • The patient's perceived relative intensity level based on their level of effort relative to his or her fitness. Patients who are less fit generally require a higher level of effort than fitter people who do the same activity. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the relative intensity level as classified by the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines (PAG) for Americans. According to the 2008 PAG, on a scale of 0 to 10, where sitting is 0 and the highest level of effort possible is 10, moderate-intensity activity is at a level of 5 or 6, and vigorous-intensity activity is a 7 or 8.
