Definition

Neutralization methods such as fluorescent focus neutralization (FFN) is used to confirm positive Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) results found with screening methods such as ELISA. It uses sample and control serums that are diluted and incubated on the PRRSV infected cells followed by florescent microscopic examination for characteristic patterns of fluorescent staining. Confirmatory tests are pivotal to provide a definitive diagnosis because false positives or negatives result in significant economic loss to livestock producers.
