Definition

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA in dried blood spots can be used for retrospective diagnosis of congenital CMV, for example, in patients with unexplained childhood-onset hearing loss. Utility of the test in newborn screening for CMV infection has not been established. [PMID: 25889596] Dried blood spot testing may also be used to monitor immunocompromised patients, such as those who have undergone organ transplant. [PMID: 24483296]
