Definition
- The Clinical Parasitology Unit at NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has been using molecular techniques in conjunction with conventional techniques to diagnose filariasis in blood and skin samples from immigrants, expatriates, and immigrants since 1999. Molecular assays have been found to be at least as sensitive as conventional techniques. In addition, less specimen is required, and laboratory personnel do not need specialized training in parasitology laboratory techniques. [PMID: 20980560]
