Definition
- Molecular techniques are used to detect Leishmania DNA in tissue samples in order to diagnose cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis and to identify the causative species. Specimens from skin lesions can be used for cutaneous disease, and liver or lymph node biopsy specimens are an alternative to bone marrow or whole blood for diagnosing visceral leishmaniasis.
