Definition

This panel includes the individual terms for reporting whether or not a viable microorganism is present in a patient specimen based on different culture methods. A single specimen may be split among one or more types of culture devices (e.g., aerobic and anaerobic bottles), depending on the clinical context. The results for the terms in this panel are typically exchanged between laboratory devices and/or stored within the laboratory information system (LIS/LIMS). This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the bioMerieux BacT culture bottles for the recovery and detection of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) from platelet specimens.
