Definition
- Plasma ceramide levels are associated with cardiovascular disease including atherosclerosis, hypertension, stroke, and myocardial infarction, as well as type 2 diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, and obesity. Three ceramides in particular have been associated with increased risk: Cer16:0, Cer18:0, and Cer24:1. The ceramide risk score predicts five-year risk of cardiovascular events based on the ceramide profile.
