Definition
- Quantitative detection of SARS coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral load in a specimen, such as a nasopharyngeal swab, blood, serum, or stool, by nucleic acid amplification with probe-based detection. The viral load reflects how well a virus is replicating in an infected person. A high viral load for SARS-CoV-2 indicates a significant amount of coronavirus is present in the patient.
