Zimnitsky urine concentration panel - Urine

Zimnitsky Pnl Ur

Definition

  • The Zimnitsky urine test is performed to evaluate the kidney's ability to concentrate and dilute urine. In this test, urine samples are collection every 3 hours for a continuous 24 hours, and the volume and specific gravity for each sample are determined. The pattern of the combination of urine volume and specific gravity can help diagnose various conditions such as chronic renal failure (persistent low specific gravity), diabetes insipidus (persistent low specific gravity and polyuria), diabetes mellitus (high specific gravity and polyuria), and acute glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome (high specific gravity and oliguria).
